5 Prayers for Peace and Joy at Christmas

Are you stressing over the number of presents you need to buy? Are you scouring the internet for holiday recipes to impress people at parties? Are you trying to squeeze in “fun family activities” to manufacture a little more happiness and holiday cheer?

The Christmas season can be a joyous occasion! For Christians, it’s the annual celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus, who came to earth to pay the price for our sins.

But…some of the cultural aspects of Christmas can actually leave us with feelings of stress and anxiety, instead of peace and joy.

Financial burdens

Unmet expectations

Overly busy schedules

If you’re feeling overwhelmed this season, then we encourage you to turn to God – the only One who can fill you with true peace and joy. If you’re not sure what to say, here are 5 prayers that you can pray based on Scripture.

…the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).
Isaiah 7:14

God, help me to focus on those last words – “God is with us.” That’s what Christmas is all about. You left Heaven and came down to be with your people. That thought brings me peace. When I am stressed…you are with me. When I’m feeling overwhelmed…you are with me. When my expectations of other people and the world are not met…you are with me. Thank you, Lord.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16

Lord, you are the best gift giver! Thank you for the gift of your Son. Thank you that Jesus paid the price for my sin, so that my eternity with you is secure. Let that reality fill me with joy and peace!

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the eternal Rock.
Isaiah 26:3-4

God, Help me to focus on you this Christmas season instead of all of the fleeting things around me. The lights…the presents…the gatherings…they will all be packed away and over soon. But YOU will remain. I want to fix my thoughts on you! Help me, Jesus.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

Lord, let everything I do bring you glory. The gifts I give…the gatherings I have… the words I speak…let all of those things point others to YOU. Fill me with JOY and let it overflow to those around me!

I am leaving you with a gift- peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14:27

God, this world is filled with busyness, distraction, and chaos. But, those aren’t things that you want for me. You want me to have peace of mind and heart as I trust in you. Give me the strength to discard the things that keep me from peace. Help me to say “no” to the things of this world.
